Caring for the elderly
Franchising in-home healthcare
In-home healthcare is one of the hottest concepts in franchising today. According to the Wall Street Journal, this sector has become one of franchising's fastest growing corners. As the population of the elderly grows, families are increasingly turning to in home care for help. Such operations help the elderly in running their daily lives, incuding bathing, cooking, light housework, light errands, and sometimes dispensing medication.
My grandparents are both in their nineties and I discovered first hand the value of in-home care. But what makes in-home care fit into the franchise world? Technology and training. Highly regimented training programs and software products that ensure all units are run the same way, and ensures there are key metrics and accountability, for instance tracking sales calls made to hospitals and nursing homes every week, seeking patient referrals. According to Jim Booth, President of Comfort Keepers, one of the largest home healthcare franchisers in the US, sales and marketing experience is the number one key factor in success, not health industry experience.
The person who comes in to look after my grandfather has a day job as a nurse in a hospital, but he works solo. Have come across only one agency in Bangalore offering in-home care, Nightingale Elder Services but not sure they have a franchise operation. Given that the number of elderly in India will explode over the next few years, there might be huge potential for in-home care franchising in India.
